A Brief History of Pink Gin

If you’re a craft gin lover, you’ve likely stumbled across the pink gin trend. Pink trends have become unique popular over recent years, meaning many Australian gin distilleries have started working on their very own signature pink premium gin. But what makes this tinged gin so spectacular?

How It Started

Much like the history of Gin, pink gin follows a timeline across oceans become it became the cocktail favourite it is today. In the beginning of the 1800s, a German physician by the name of Dr Siegert had undertaken a journey to South America, in search for a cure to common stomach issues.

Through this search came the creation of we today know as Angostura Bitters. These bitters were often used to cure sea sickness on Naval ships. However, these bitters lived up to their name and – to combat their strong flavour – gin was often added to make the entire concoction more palatable. More so, it had unique pink tinge to it.

This combination quickly became popular through the UK and ultimately formed what we know today as ‘Pink Gin’.

How It’s Going

These days, pink gin is made slightly differently. In essence, the base gin would be distilled as with any other gin. The trick is that after distillation, the base gin is infused with coloured bitters or red and pink fruits.

These fruits are often raspberries or strawberries as they tend to give off a darker colour.

Cocktails You Can Make with Pink Gin

There really is no limit to what you could create with a pink, premium gin. Whether you whip up a Gin & Tonic or switch it up with a Negroni – pink gin offers the same versatility as any other craft gin.
