For a large part, the production, distribution and increased consumption in is in part thanks to the British navy.
It was during these times that gin became a very popular spirit of choice amongst navy officers. However, as large barrels of gin were often stored below deck – safety concerns arose, and these older barrels could leak and wet the gun powered which was conveniently stored between these barrels.
Wet gunpowder would be no fun. However, if the alcohol which has wet the gunpowder has an alcohol content higher than 57.15% - the gun powder would still burn. Simply enough, navy officers then chose to start producing gin with a higher alcohol content.
So, what is Navy Strength Gin?
Simply put, navy strength gin with an alcohol content about 57.15%. As most gins are diluted in order to achieve their preferred alcohol content, it is safe to say that navy strength gin is closest to gins original flavour.
What is important to note is that navy strength gin has one of the strongest “gin” flavours and it may not be every one’s cup of G&T. However, it’s always a good idea to give it a try, especially if you are doing a tasting at a gin distillery.

Navy strength gins are great for cocktails where you really want them to pack a punch. Navy strength gins are often used in a Dry Martini as they offer a lot of flavour.
Equally so, pairing your navy strength gin with a simple tonic is also a great way to celebrate that delicious gin flavour.
