Start Neat

 

While you don’t usually drink gin neat, it’s the best way to get an idea of what the craft gin really tastes like. This will help you discern different notes and botanicals, develop your gin palate and help when you start pairing the gin with other flavours.

 

Use a Curved Glass

 

Curved glasses capture aromas and scents, making it easier to develop the “nose” of the gin. This is a bit like the process used in a wine tasting, and we’ll demonstrate it at our gin bar in Richmond. You take room temperature gin and swirl it around and up the sides of the glass, helping to release the full aroma of the spirit.

 

Use a Tasting Sequence

 

Rather than just gulping your craft gin down in one go, you should follow a tasting sequence so that you get a much fuller and more complete impression of the gins being sampled. After smelling the gin and trying to pick up different aromas, take a small sip of the gin and see if you can taste what you smelled. Rather than swallowing immediately, let the gin rest on your tongue – be prepared for a slight, warm burn! – and swirl it around to see if you can pick up on other more subtle flavours. Now swallow and pay attention to what flavours vanish and what flavours linger in your mouth.

 

Cleanse Your Palate

 

Gins have intense smells and flavours, so it’s important not to overwhelm your senses by trying several different craft gins all in a row. At a gin tasting in Melbourne, you will have breaks between sampling each gin where you can cleanse your palate and reset your senses. This can be done by tasting a sorbet, sniffing freshly roasted coffee beans, or drinking a glass of water.
